It looks like the top four promotion spots have been booked in the second tier, however big performances might yet turn things on their head.

Defending champions Team Ramrod have surged to pole position in Serie A and deservedly so. Their overall points total is streets ahead of their nearest rivals. However, they have a tricky trip to the Cape Crusaders in the penultimate round of games – a side with a very outside shot at the title.

Closest challenge comes from the in-form Gianfranco Gorgonzola who have put together a strong late-season surge. But both The Bootiful Game and the G31 Galacticos can still mount a challenge with just three and four points to make up respectively.

The dream is over for the Galliano Hotshots, Rockstars Fragmented and Lockerbie Legends who were all in contention at one stage. Willie’s Warriors are midtable after a topsy-turvy season and will regret a woeful start to the campaign. Sicilia have had a late season surge while the Doonhamers have plummeted in the closing weeks.

Oisin’s Eleven were also once in contention for the title but it has been a hard season for Abercromby’s medal and AC Putanesca but they will live to fight another year.

The fate is less clear for Atletico Madboy, Cantenaccio, Villaunreal, Biancoverdi and Joe Bhoy FC. They look to be in a five-way fight to avoid three of the relegation slots.
Barring a miracle, Dynamo Kev are already heading to Serie B.

Talking of the second division, the title there remains up for grabs. The Oklahoma Soccer Club hold a big advantage which it will be hard to throw away. It looks like second place will be a straight fight between Fitz_hatrick and We Ate All the Pies while the final promotion spot belongs to FC Copenhacking at present.

With nearly 100 points to make up, however, it will take a remarkable recovery for FC Pietro Nato to make it to Serie A now. Similarly, Titus Bramble have done marvellously well to get to seventh place overtaking early pace-setters like Mope Utd and Bairnfica.

A last mention for Inter Meringue, Can’t Get Right, Wynn Some Lose Some, All Stars, Old Yellow Dogs, The Damned United and Juggernaut. Thanks for competing all of you. We hope to see at least some of your sides back next year.

Final furlong looks a thriller

It’s crunchtime in the Grappa Kings Serie A with the new format proving a thrilling success. Eight teams are within four points of one another at the top of the table with just seven weeks to go. Who can make the final rush and take the crown?

Here we band the teams according to their prospects.

TITLE FIGHTERS – Defending champion Rich Godden leads the way with Team Ramrod but only by the most slender of margins thanks to his defeat by title rivals Iain Pollock’s Lockerbie Legends. Godden’s crew had looked like setting sail for victory last week but their wings have been clipped by the Legends. Having shaken off their faith in Liverpool players it has been onwards and upwards for the Lockerbie side. One of their top scorers this week was even an Evertonian.

Also in the hunt are long-time pacesetters Colin Moffat’s G31 Galacticos. Fuelled, like many teams, by the Lampard-Drogba combo they crushed the lowly Atletico Madboy this week to move within a point of glory. Also right there is Chelsea’s biggest fan (both literally and metaphorically) Kenny Eggo. Once again, he has turned to the dark side in his pursuit of success – Wayne Rooney is in his line-up.

Rounding out the challengers are Kenny Ross’s The Bootiful Game who seem to have ditched their misfortune for a time and James Horncastle’s Cape Crusaders who have made it their stated mission to “beat Godden at all costs”. The two Rinaldis, Giancarlo and Carlo, seem to be heading in opposite directions but both the Doonhamers and Gianfranco Gorgonzola are firmly in the running for glory.

OUTSIDE SHOTS/UEFA CONTENDERS – It will take a fine finale for Serafino Ingardia’s Sicilia to win the league but they are heading in the right direction. In less convincing form are Doug Archibald’s Rockstars Fragmented (possibly distracted by the rugby), Lachlan Eggo’s Oisin’s Eleven (distraught at Chelsea’s Champions League elimination?), Willie Johnston’s Willie’s Warriors (revival has hit a wall) and Stefano Rinaldi’s AC Putanesca (fatherhood taking its toll?). Nonetheless, they could all make it near to the top of the table with a good finish.

STRUGGLERS/RELEGATION FEARS – Alex Robertson’s Abercromby’s Medal look in the best position to avoid the drop but with four teams relegated, nothing is guaranteed. After looking like no-hopers, Robbo’s men appear to have turned the corner. Pat Cook’s Cantenaccio should also be too good to go down – they have gathered less points than their form deserves. However, things are less bright for Joe O’Brien at Joe Bhoy FC (another Mogga?) and the Colthart clan with father and son Colin and Ethan in danger of the drop. The prospects for Kevin Sharp and Steve Wilson look bleak indeed. However, there are 21 points at their disposal which could secure safety with some ease.

In Serie B just like at Manchester United, the Americans have taken control. Fuelled by spiralling debts and hours of fantasy sports study, Dr Khrem – otherwise known as Mike Maliskas – stormed to the top on the back of a 122 point haul. It has left Steve Fitzpatrick and Kieran Westbrook with a mountain to climb. They are still within range but after winning the Grappa Cup, those US boys look unstoppable.

Graeme Nicol appears to have grabbed the last promotion spot although he will need to keep looking over his shoulder at the threat of Peter Bourne’s Pietro Nato and Midge Mowbray’s Mope Utd.

The amazing surge of Aidan Bain’s Titus Bramble continues and they would surely have been promotion contenders if they had not missed the opening weeks of the season. Stef Todd’s Bairnfica continue to perform well despite their cup elimination and another US competitor, Bill Isley, appears to have got the hang of things late in the season. Unlike David Wynn who has tailed off badly after a promising start (maybe too busy laughing at Mowbray’s Celtic).

It looks like another Serie B season looms for Siofra Eggo, Rossella Marrai, Stephen Heath, Elia Davidson and Frank Bentz. But they have been honourable competitors whose involvement has been much appreciated by the league commissioner. Next year, folks, there is always next year…

US triumph in Grappa Cup

It was an overseas victory in the Grappa Cup last week as Beat Scotty for Mike Maliskas overwhelmed Iain Pollock's Lockerbie Legends in the final.

This was a particularly impressive display as it means the trophy not only leaves the UK but also goes to a second division side - although they look in line for promotion.

Sincere apologies for the late report, due to me being off for a few days.

Normal service will be resumed in future.

GRAPPA CUP FINAL RESULT

Lockerbie Legends 1 Beat Scotty 4

Cup finalists take centre stage

It's Scotland versus the US in the final of the Grappa Cup. It now looks like a real three-way fight at the top. Graeme Nicol will hope to hang on to that last promotion slot.

A word of praise, briefly, for Aidan Bain. He gave everyone two weeks' start and now sits in an impressive 9th place and is hot on the heels of Stef Todd.

The top division also remains a close fight. The G31 Galacticos have a narrow advantage but Team Ramrod remain serious contenders along with the Doonhamers, Galliano Hotshots and Cape Crusaders.

With the Lockerbie Legends on a surge and The Bootiful Game and Willie's Warriors also in top form, only a fool could rule them out of a title bid too.

In the relegation zone, the plight of Villaunreal FC gets worse and worse. A team run by, I believe, the only Scotland-capped manager in the league now sits in second bottom with only the lowly Biancoverdi behind them. Salvation sits five points away with the last four in the league facing the prospect of life in Serie B.

Serie A sides take a tumble

It was a rough cup weekend for some famous names in the Grappa Kings League top division.

No fewer than seven Serie A sides were eliminated by their lower league rivals.

Colin Colthart, Steve Wilson, Alex Robertson, Stefano Rinaldi, Pat Cook, Kenny Eggo and Joseph O'Brien - your boys took a HELL of a beating!

The full results were as follows

Villaunreal 0 v Wynn Some Lose Some 1 (after extra time)
Rockstars Fragmented 1 v Doonhamers 3
Juggernaut 1 v Sicilia 3
Cape Crusaders 1 v The Bootiful Game 4
Fitz_Hattrick 4 v FC Pietro Nato 3
Biancoverdi 0 v FC Copenhacking 2
Abercromby's Medal 1 v We Ate All the Pies 3
Titus Bramble 3 v AC Putanesca 1
G31 Galacticos 2 v Atletico Madboy 1 (after extra time)
Mope Utd 3 v Beat Scotty 3 (Beat Scotty win 5-4 on penalties)
Old Yellow Dawgs 0 v Gianfranco Gorgonzola 1
Team Ramrod 3 v Willie's Warriors 4
Lockerbie Legends 3 v The Damned United 0
Galliano Hotshots 2 v Cant Get Right 3
Joe Bhoy FC 1 v Bairnfica 2
Cantenaccio 2 v Oisin's Eleven 3

The draw for the last 16 to be played this week is as follows. This year, for the first time, it gives our Serie B sides a chance to put one over on their more illustrious Serie A rivals.

Due to previous moaning and groaning by some managers, the draw was completely unseeded. A star performance by former Ranger Carlos Cuellar gave him a resounding win over the in-form Doonhamers this week.

And to think he still tries to pretend he is a St Mirren fan!

Other impressive points hauls came from Joe Bhoy FC, the Lockerbie Legends and Team Ramrod - although this last team made no progress due to meeting the high-flying Legends.

It all leaves nine teams within six points of the top of the table. A vindication for the thrilling new system imposed on the GKL this year.

In Serie B, not much has altered as Steve Fitzpatrick, Kieran Westbrook, David Wynn and Dr Khrem sit in the four promotion places. However, there is enough quality in the division to suggest that they could still be toppled in the weeks ahead.

Enjoy the international break, everyone, but don't forget to keep studying the injury lists...

Who shot KR?

He must have done something pretty bad in a past life. Maybe he killed the neighbours' cat. Perhaps he tripped an old lady crossing the road. It might have been him who thought pedestrianising Dumfries town centre was a good idea.

Whatever it was, Kenny Ross is paying for it in this existence.

How else can we explain his misfortunes since the new GKL season began? Under the old system he would have been sitting pretty in second place. Under the new rules, he is slumping in 10th. Heck, he's even behind Kenny Eggo - and that's not a position any man likes to find himself in.

This week his tragedies were compounded when he contrived to lose to little Gianfranco Gorgonzola. Once again it was a narrow defeat but, nonetheless, it leaves him marooned in midtable.

Perhaps a ritual sacrifice to the footballing Gods may be the only cure to this curse. We suggest burning one of Eggo's Chelsea tops. Even if it doesn't work, it will make you feel better.

But KR's crisis is everyone else's gain. The Galacticos and Crusaders are locked in the epic conflict their names suggest at the top of the table but they should watch out for a devilish trio on their tails.

Doug Archibald and Iain Pollock have written more match reports than they've had hot dinners (well, looking at Doug's belly, maybe that's not strictly true). And Carlo Rinaldi is proving more than just a lookalike for his namesake Ancelotti.

Other big performances this week came from Team Ramrod and Oisin's Eleven. And a word, too, for Willie Johnston who completed a double over the Colthart clan to continue his revival. Rumour has it he has bought himself a fancy soft-top motor to celebrate.

In Serie B it is all about Steve Fitzpatrick for the time being. He has built a healthy advantage over his rivals. However, there are plenty of weeks for Kieran Westbrook, David Wynn, Dr Khrem and the rest to narrow that gap.

And they all have the consolation of knowing they're not cursed liked Kenny Ross.

Finally, in case of chants of "You Only Write When You're Winning!" I should point out that I was on holiday last week with my family and unable to update the blog. However, having suffered defeat to Ethan Colthart I hereby officially accept that I am, as he so often tells me, a loser...

Trio tussle at the top

Three teams are locked at the top of the GKL as we head into the international break. The outstanding Colin Moffat has amassed 531 points under the old scoring scheme but nonetheless has James Horncastle and Iain Pollock hot on his heels.

However, they would do well to cast a worried eye over their shoulders. Defending champions Team Ramrod are storming up the table and are just two points adrift. Everything suggests they will not give up their crown without a fight.

Wily veterans and hopeful youths make up a four-team group on 15 points. Old stagers Doug Archibald and Carlo Rinaldi currently have the edge over Lachlan Eggo and the league's luckiest manager Ethan Colthart (second bottom on the old scoring system!). Poor Angry Archibald will have been greetin' into his beard this week as his 74 point haul would have beaten everyone bar the high-flying Galacticos.

Kenny Ross has crowing rights in Dumfries and Galloway Council after overtaking Kenny Eggo but surely the Special Wan will not let this continue. They are joined in midtable by Calcio Italia stalwarts Giancarlo Rinaldi, Serafino Ingardia and Steve Wilson.

Stefano Rinaldi stayed stuck on nine points this week but is still ahead of Colin Colthart who took a thumping in the BBC Dumfries derby clash with Gianfranco Gorgonzola. Joe O'Brien and Kev Sharp sit with them on nine points.

It looks like Pat Cook's luck has finally turned as he now has a couple of wins under his belt. The champagne was flowing in the Glen this weekend, too, as Willie's Warriors broke their duck and scraped past Sicilia. Alex Robertson finds himself, where he likes to be, at the bottom.

The Serie B battle remains intense. Young hack David Wynn had a bad week to leave the door open to a resurgent Steve Fitzpatrick to take over top spot. Kieran Westbrook, Bob Maliskas, Midge Mowbray, just back from China Graeme Nicol and Stef Todd are also firmly in contention.

A word of praise for Rossella Marrai who, after a few poor performances, struck an impressive 69 points this gameweek to drag herself back up the table. The teams which trail her should not give up hope, however. There are plenty of weeks to produce the goods.

Too close to call

Who needs any other entertainment, this GKL is proving the hottest contested tournament in Europe. Six weeks in and there are 16 (SIXTEEN) teams within three points at the top of the table. Vindication, if it was needed, for the switch to the new scoring system.

Performance of the week came from Iain Pollock's Lockerbie Legends as they thrashed lowly Cantenaccio to move into fourth spot. But it was the G31 Galacticos who went back to the top as they dished out a summary beating to Gianfranco Gorgonzola. Sunday goals for Didi Drogba and Ashley Cole helped their cause.

Eggo Senior saw off Dynamo Kev to go third but Eggo Junior slumped to defeat against the Doonhamers. Old Uncle Carlo still has his magic as he is proving by doubling up his lecturing duties with managing Chelsea FC this season.

Another veteran doing well is Doug Archibald. The Rockstars Fragmented, clearly taking the correct dose of their medication at present, saw off a revamped Willie's Warriors. Very disappointing for Mr Johnston who played his wildcard and still got beat.

The Cape Crusaders were toppled from the top by a resurgent Atletico Madboy. Ethan Colthart has been the league's jammiest manager so far. His 261 points have given him four wins whereas Cantenaccio's 272 points have won them none. He will hope his luck holds in the weeks ahead.

Team Ramrod continue to rise while Oisin's Eleven slip down the table. Also moving up were Kenny Ross and Joe O'Brien while Colin Colthart, Giancarlo Rinaldi, Steve Wilson, Kev Sharp and Serafino Ingardia slip down the way. Stefano Rinaldi got a rare win but otherwise there were no points gained by the bottom four.

In Serie B David Wynn holds a slender two-point lead over Kieran Westbrook. Steve Fitzpatrick is also in close contention.

But watch out for a resurgent pie-fuelled Graeme Nicol and the US managers Bill Isley and Stephen Heath who both added 70+ points. It may not be so easy for Aidan Bain to overtake them all after all...

Ramrod rides again!

Reigning champion Rich Godden fired a shot across the bows of his GKL rivals with a stunning week five display. His 83 point haul crushed the high-flying G31 Galacticos and sent out a message of intent. All rivals have been warned.

The Galacticos defeat allowed James Horncastle to sweep to the top with his Cape Crusaders. He is followed closely by Lachlan Eggo who edged past bottom side Cantenaccio in a low-scoring affair. It was a better performance, however, than his father Kenny could muster going down by a single point to Lockerbie Legends - a narrow win for Liverpool over Chelsea there.

Other strong performances came from the Rinaldi boys, Carlo and Giancarlo, both racking up more than 60 points to push the Doonhamers and Gianfranco Gorgonzola up the table. They still trail the rising Dynamo Kev and falling Villaunreal for the time being.

Worst displays of the week came from Steve Wilson, Stefano Rinaldi, Doug Archibald and Willie Johnston. All four failed to break the 40 point barrier which is the hallmark of success - better must be produced soon.

Stefano's sluggish performance aided the recovery of Kenny Ross as his Bootiful Game recorded just their second win of the season to move up the table. Under the old points system they would be breathing down Kenny Eggo's neck but, as it is, he finds himself 11 places adrift of his council rival.

The only other managers on the move were Atletico Madboy and Siciliana (on the rise) and Joe Bhoy FC (in decline). The bottom four remain unchanged.

In Serie B David Wynn threw down the gauntlet to Kieran Westbrook with a 60 point display that puts him four points from the top. America's finest, Premium Lumber, had a bad week and drop to third.

A clutch of teams will still fancy their chances of overhauling the top trio but best on the week were Midge Mowbray and Siofra Eggo who outscored her Serie A brother and father. Stephen Heath has shown a sign of life down the table at last while it is surely only a matter of time before Aidan Bain makes it off bottom spot.

GKL shows its teeth

Unlike the English Premiership where the same four teams have dominated since doomsday, the Grappa Kings League is shaping up to be a thriller already this year. Four weeks gone, nobody undefeated and no fewer than seven teams tied for the league.

Colin Moffat's golden run was brought to a shock end by upstart Joe O'Brien while the "Battle of the Eggos" went Kenny's way as he broke his son's heart and overtook him up the league table. The Cape Crusaders grabbed the narrowest of wins over Siciliana while Steve Wilson's Biancoverdi grabbed all three points against whipping boys Cantenaccio.

Lachlan Eggo remains in a share of the lead despite his defeat to his old daddy but he is joined on nine points by grizzled old hack Doug Archibald and slightly less grizzled old hack Colin Colthart. The sound of glugging Rioja celebrations had barely died down in Archibald mansions after his victory over Joe Bhoy FC last week.

It proved to be a better round of matches for the Rinaldi family in gameweek four. All three recorded wins with manager of the week going to Stefano who restored some family honour by administering a time-honoured skelping to Ethan Colthart. Carlo cracked 64 points past struggling Kenny Ross and Giancarlo edged the BBC derby match with Willie Johnston.

Another impressive points scorer was Iain Pollock who racked up 70 in a win which leaves him hot on the heels of Dynamo Kev. But there was no end to defending champion Rich Godden's woes as he succumbed to the aforemention old Archibald. And, despite a spirited display, Alex Robertson went down to defeat as did the ever-unfortunate Pat Cook.

In Serie B it was a golden week for Kieran Westbrook as he soared to the top of the table leaving Mike Maliskas and David Wynn in his wake. Peter Bourne also enjoyed a good points total which pushed him up the table while Fitz_hatrick also hit the 60 point mark to move to fourth and within striking distance of the lead.

Midge Mowbray, Stef Todd, Graeme Nicol, Siofra Eggo and Elia Davidson all had solid weeks too, with the biggest loser being the All Stars who gathered just 27 points. Our US trio of Can't Get Right, Old Yellow Dawgs and Juggernaut better watch out too. New boy Aidan Bain has given them a head start but his 50 points in his first week suggest he could do some serious overtaking soon.

Galacticos Shine

The top of the table clash between the G31 Galacticos and the Cape Crusaders did not disappoint this week. Colin Moffat's men edged the win 61-60 to keep their 100% record. The only other team to match them is young Lachlan Eggo who also boasts three wins out of three with Oisin's Eleven.

Rapid risers Dynamo Kev saw off a struggling Gianfranco Gorgonzola thanks to Ashley Young's star performance in helping to dump Liverpool. Elsewhere the Colthart family (Colin and Ethan) dumped the Rinaldis (Carlo and Stefano) to boost themselves up the table.

Serafino Ingardia's luck ran out as a meagre 31 points saw him slump to defeat against Alex Robertson who recorded his first win. Nonetheless, Siciliana stay in a group of teams on six points which also includes Kenny Eggo's Galliano Hotshots, Doug Archibald's Rockstars Fragmented, and Steve Wilson's Biancoverdi.

Elsewhere, Willie Johnston returned from pre-season training in Tuscany to scrap out the first draw of the season with last year's champions Team Ramrod. While Iain Pollock's Lockerbie Legends - a bit like his heroes Liverpool - remain stuck on three points.

Rooted to the bottom at present is our Australian challenger, Pat Cook, who is in danger of emulating his nation's Ashes performances. Alongside him is recent-dad Stefano Rinaldi - are the late-night feeds taking their toll? And shouldn't those late-night feeds involve his son, not just himself?

In Serie B the bold Mike Maliskas has toppled David Wynn for the time being. There were other strong performances from DG Standard's finest Kieran Westbrook who looks threatening in third and Graeme "I'm paying attention this year" Nicol who would have done better but for a late goal conceded by Brad Friedel.

A poor week from Raith Rovers 18th most famous fan Midge Mowbray allowed Steve Fitzpatrick, Rossella Marrai and Falkirk's 12th most famous fan Stef Todd to close the gap on him in 4th. While Elia Davidson closed in on Siofra Eggo in the young female manager of the year category.

Peter Bourne continues to struggle ahead of our American bosses who are still getting to grips with the game. Bill Isley, Stephen Heath and Frank Bentz have a lot to learn. Will they manage it before the season ends?

Action stations

The games have been coming thick and fast in the early stages of the Grappa Kings League. An odd second round of matches - with just six Premiership games played - has already tested managers to the full. Some have already been found wanting while others have flourished.

Top of the heap in Serie A is Colin Moffat with his G31 Galacticos but hot on his heels are Kenny and Lachlan Eggo (fired up by Chelsea power) and James Horncastle's Cape Crusaders. With a meeting between first and third this weekend (Moffat v Horncastle), somebody's 100% record will snap.

The last manager with two wins out of two is "Mr Lucky" Serafino Ingardia and his Siciliana. He has gathered just 79 fantasy points but it has been enough to get him a pair of victories. Compare that with "Mr Unlucky" Kenny Ross - The Bootiful Game have amassed 95 points but sit with a big zero next to their name. However, like so many other managers he still has plenty of time to turn things around.

The Serie B pace is being set by David Wynn but he is being tracked by our top performing American manager Mike Maliskas. Kirkcaldy's finest Midge Mowbray follows them with Kieran Westbrook in close attendance. Dunce's cap so far to Stephen Heath who is finding out that fantasy baseball and fantasy "soccer" are worlds apart.

New season takes shape

With less than a week to go, the Grappa Kings Serie A is ready for the off. Once again, we are set for a thrilling season of action - this time under head-to-head rules allowing for taunts and jibes against opposition managers on a weekly basis.

Defending champion Rich Godden is back with Team Ramrod but the league has lost three stars with the defection of the Reilly family en masse. However, we believe (like Serie A without Kaka and Ibrahimovic) there is still plenty of quality in the mix.

From the BBC we are pleased to have secured the return of Colin Colthart, Willie Johnston, Colin Moffat and the league supremo Giancarlo Rinaldi. From the Calcio Italia family we welcome - in addition to Rich Godden - Serafino Ingardia, Steve Wilson (on a mission to knock Godden off his perch) and James Horncastle.

Dumfries and Galloway Standard links bring us grizzled old Borderer Doug Archibald, still reeling from Sigma Omuluc Dons fan Iain Pollock and Joseph "Honest Joe" O'Brien. Our youth policy is assured with young Ethan Colthart and Lachlan Eggo in the set-up.

Dumfries and Galloway Council has released Kenny Eggo and Kenny Ross from their single status wage celebrations in order to participate (expect big spending come their October pay rises). From the world of education (we use the term loosely) come Carlo Rinaldi and Kevin Sharp. While Australian Milan fan Pat Cook joins the fray along with Glaswegian dodgy whisky salesman Alex Robertson.

Finally, biggest thanks to Stefano "Big Stef" Rinaldi for signing up again this season. He has just become a dad for the first time and we all know how that can interfere with your fantasy sports.

Our Serie B is currently taking shape with five teams - many of them from the USA, trying to find their feet in UK fantasy sports. Hopefully, more names will sign up in the week remaining before the Premiership gets under way.

Godden reigns supreme

In the end, like some Wallace and Gromit film title, it was a case of The Wrong Captain. If grizzled old fantasy sports veteran Martino "Mine's A Guinness" O'Reilly had gone for Gareth Barry over John Carew he would be sitting as GKL champion. Instead, like Gordon Strachan, he has only regrets.

A new champions has been crowned in the shape of Rich Godden. A refugee from the good ship Calcio Italia he has had an impressively consistent campaign. He nearly slipped up with a poor week at the end but he thoroughly deserves his title.

There was a solid third place finish to go along with their cup victory for Mutu's Avengers but the strongest finish came from another Reilly - this time Brian. It goes to show what an incentive the thought of parting with money to your brother can be. All top four teams can be proud of the Champions League qualification.

In the Europa Cup zone came Colin Moffat, Kenny Ross and a resurgent Colin Colthart. All three had their moments this campaign and must have been left wondering what might have been. Serious injury crippled Colthart's efforts while overcoming the handicap of working for the BBC and Dumfries and Galloway Council respectively was no mean feat for Moffat and Ross.

Narrowly missing out was the Dumfries and Galloway Standard's Iain Pollock. A league champion of yesteryear he will surely be back to glory soon. Possibly before his beloved Liverpool ever snatch the Premiership off Manchester United.

The efforts of Dillon Colthart have, of course, been shrouded in controversy. The GKL confirms his expulsion for next year due to alleged collusion with father Colin. A sorry note in an otherwise fine league set-up.

Carlo Rinaldi will be delighted with his top ten finish after getting to grips with the game as the season progressed. He has vowed to pay more attention next year and maybe even watch the occasional English game - if only when Serie A is on a break.

James Horncastle managed a creditable 11th but was in the hunt for better. While Willie Johnston produced a late surge that saw him easily avoid relegation to the GKL Second Division. Indeed, he scooped manager of the month for May. If only he had been so attentive all year.

Rounding out the 16 managers invited to take part in the GKL Serie A next year are Doug "The Border Blatterer" Archibald, Serafino "Anyone Want Tickets for the Champions League Final?" Ingardia, Clive Lindsay and the Eggos - Lachlan and Kenny. All of which should make for a thrilling new season.

Missing out on the top flight were many famous names. Tommy Reilly may be struggling with the advancing years, Ethan Colthart simply peaked too soon (week one, loser!) and Stefano Rinaldi is clearly anxious at imminent fatherhood.

The teaching brigade Davie Dillon, Kevin Sharp and Jim Gordon had mixed fortunes but could surely do better. Especially if someone explains to big Jim that you can actually make transfers during the season!

A noble effort too by Davie Wynn (he got consolation in the SPL), Elia Davidson (female manager of the year), Alex Robertson (he let the whisky get in the way) and Siofra Eggo (she fell apart late in the day). A slot in the Hall of Shame, however, goes to Billy Davidson. A fine footballer, yes, but a low level fantasy sportsman.

So, the honours were assigned as follows.

GKL CHAMPION - Rich Godden.
GRAPPA CUP - Giancarlo Rinaldi
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP PLACES - Rich Godden, Martin Reilly, Giancarlo Rinaldi.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFIERS - Brian Reilly.
EUROPA CUP - Colin Moffat, Kenny Ross, Colin Colthart.
INTERTOTO CUP - Iain Pollock, Carlo Rinaldi, James Horncastle.
SERIE A SURVIVAL - Willie Johnston, Doug Archibald, Serafino Ingardia, Clive Lindsay, Lachlan Eggo, Kenny Eggo.

The above managers will all be invited back next year.

EXPELLED FROM LEAGUE - Dillon Colthart.

The remaining managers will all be asked to help form the new GKL Serie B.

Finally, a big thanks to all for taking part.

Titans locked toe to toe

While the Grappa Cup has been rumbling on two giants of fantasy sports remain locked in combat at the top of the GKL. Martin Reilly and Rich Godden have traded blows for some time and who comes out on top remains anyone's guess.

The fight for the last Champions League spot also looks interesting with Brian Reilly chasing March's manager of the month Colin Moffat. It looks like Kenny Ross will have to settle for the UEFA Cup.

At the relegation positions (top 16 form the league next year), Willie Johnston will hope to be saved by the plunging Serafino Ingardia - September's manager of the month award seems ancient history. Also in the survival dogfight are Tommy Reilly, Kenny Eggo, Carlo Rinaldi, Clive Lindsay and maybe even Doug Archibald.

A word of praise for Jim Gordon, too. His nine point haul in week 32 must be the worst in league history. Surprising, with a great like Kim Do-Heon in his side.

It's a knockout

Cup preliminary round results.

Tiger Nation 4 Bully Wee Clive 2
Ferguson 87 2 Pride of the Glen 1
FC Tardis 2 The Bootiful Game 2 (Tardis win 5-4 on penalties)
Oisin's XI 4 Athletico Mince 0
Billy's Boys 1 Ltps 4
Galliano Hotshots 3 Inter Meringue 0
Dynamo Kev 1 Fireboys United 3
Annan Athritics 1 Lockerbie Leg Ends 0 (After extra time)
Spartak Spakker 0 Doonhamers 0 (Doonhamers win 4-2 on penalties)
Town Bhoys 2 The Grappa Kids 0 (After extra time)
Salty Loch City 2 La Samba 3
Sicilia 2 Rockstars 2 (Sicilia win 9-8 on penalties)

First round proper, ties to be played March 21/22

Leith Rhagazzi v Galliano Hotshots
Doonhamers v FC Tardis
La Samba v Ferguson 87
Team Ramrod v Ltps
Tiger Nation v Annan Athritics
Town Bhoys v 442Hour Party People
Fireboys United v Oisin's XI
Sicilia v Mutu's Avengers

Cup draw details

Preliminary round

Byes for Team Ramrod, Leith Rhagazzi, Mutu's Avengers and 4-4-2Hour Party People.

Tie 1) Tiger Nation v Bully Wee Clive
Tie 2) Ferguson 87 v Pride of the Glen
Tie 3) FC Tardis v The Bootiful Game
Tie 4) Oisin's XI v Athletico Mince
Tie 5) Billy's Boys v Ltps
Tie 6) Galliano Hotshots v Inter Meringue
Tie 7) Dynamo Kev v Fireboys United
Tie 8) Annan Athritics v Lockerbie Leg Ends
Tie 9) Spartak Spakker v Doonhamers
Tie 10) Town Bhoys v The Grappa Kids
Tie 11) Salty Loch City v La Samba
Tie 12) Sicilia v Rockstars

All ties to be played 14 to 16 March. In the event that top 16 finishers decline to take a place in the Serie A their spot will be offered to the 17th place team and so on until the league is filled. The top seven and bottom eight places remained unchanged in the latest round of games giving a slightly stagnant feel to proceedings.

However, do not be fooled into thinking things are dull. The top of the table tussle between Reilly and the Ramrod is a matter of just four points. Mutu's Avengers are lurking in the wings and Colin Moffat, Kenny Ross and Brian Reilly are also grouped within ten points in the fight for the last Champions League slot. (My money's on Reilly, never bet against him when he is ferociously chasing his elder brother).

A good run could quite easily put Tiger Nation, the Lockerbie Leg Ends or, incredibly, FC Tardis, in with a shout of a top four finish too. Although this last side might yet be dragged into what I have just recently decided to call the TOP TEN DOGFIGHT.

Main protagonist at present is Carlo "Ancelotti" Rinaldi. His terrier-like refusal to give up the ghost has put his Doonhamers into 10th spot at present. By a single point he has ousted Lachlan "Lampard" Eggo. However, we expect a two-footed lunge a la Alonso soon from the young Chelsea follower.

Hot on their heels is the old Salty one himself, Colin Colthart. He has promised fans at his home stadium, the Salt Cellar, they will get into the top 10. Remember, however, this is also a man who predicted Sunderland for Europe last year and Hull for the Champions League this season. He will have to watch his back for the challenge of the likes of Seraf Ingardia and Clive Lindsay.

Our own battle of the heavyweights - Eggo versus Archibald - is currently going in the former Standard man's favour. However, they risk being caught by another "big man" Stefano Rinaldi. Stuck in the middle of this clash of the Titans is the slender Willie Johnston and the equally petite Tommy Reilly. Heaven help them.

Finally, the decline of Ethan Colthart continues although he seems blissfully unaware. He still appears to think he is top of the league even though, at this rate, that will soon only be true if he turns the table upside down. It can only be a matter of time before Kevin Sharp, Elia Davidson, Jim Gordon, Siofra Eggo and anyone else who never looks at their team overtakes him.

Reilly versus Ramrod

Having come through the busy winter period, two men have emerged at the top of the GKL table. In the green corner - grizzled, fantasy sports veteran Martin Reilly. In the blue corner - fresh-faced challenger Rich Godden. With just five points between them, it is a hell of a tussle.

Further back sit former leaders Mutu's Avengers and the Hull City of the Grappa Kings set-up The Bootiful Game. A concerted run by another Reilly, Brian, who clearly grudges losing the family bet to his brother, has put him up to fifth.

Other performances of note have come from young Lachlan Eggo who has outdone Scolari and hit a fine run of form of late to sneak into the top ten. That is also the stated target of Colin "Salty Loch" Colthart - everybody loves a trier.

In the midtable rump, Carlo Rinaldi broke through the 1000 point barrier while Serafino Ingardia continues to slide. A titanic struggle has also emerged between two sporting heavyweights (in every sense) Kenny Eggo and Doug Archibald along with a positive flyweight in comparison - Willie Johnston.

A word of ridicule for Ethan Colthart who constantly taunts teams higher up the table with cries of "Loser!". His early season form has been shown up as sheer good fortune. A year in the Grappa Kings Championship beckons.

Finally, a word of praise for Elia Davidson who has leapfrogged Siofra Eggo in the battle for Female Manager of the Year. Keep going steady Grappa Kids and you might sneak into the top 20...

Reilly goes top

No surprise to see fantasy sports veteran Martin O'Reilly hit top spot as the league goes through its crunch festive period. "Tinkerman" Rinaldi cost himself a few points by juggling his side into third place while Kenny Ross remains in close contention.

It was a slow week for points which makes Doug Archibald and Ethan Colthart's 50 point totals all the more impressive. Desperate times for Clive Lindsay, however, with a miserable 19 point haul.

Back again to update in the New Year when, no doubt, many more points will have been gathered...

Ross hangs on by fingernails

League leading Kenny Ross kept a one point advantage at the top after another low-scoring round of GKL games. His edge over second place Mutu's Avengers is now as narrow as the setting on the clippers when he last visited the hairdressers. While, in a situation neither will relish, both balding supremos have Martin Reilly breathing down their neck.

Rich Godden and Colin Moffat remain in close attention with the top five forming something of a breakaway pack. Behind them James Horncastle had a poor week with no bonus points for the inclusion of Mido despite his alleged suffering at the hands of Newcastle fans. There was a similarly disappointing haul for Bully Wee Clive in seventh spot.

Meanwhile, a full GKL inquiry has been launched into the fortunes of Dillon Colthart's FC Tardis. Suspicions have circled the league for some time that some kind of Calciopoli scandal may be taking place with his team. The youngster professes to have NO interest in football and yet his squad remains ultra-competitive. It has prompted rumours that the Greatest Goalie - also manager of Salty Loch City - has been controlling his team. As all league members know there are strict rules on running more than one side and any infringements will be dealt with in the traditional manner. (A dose of grappa spilled in the groinal area).

Manager of the week was Iain Pollock with his Lockerbie Leg Ends and there was also good progress from veterans Carlo Rinaldi and Tommy Reilly. Stefano Rinaldi also performed creditably with 55 points to his Spartak Spakker side.

Finally, on a lighter note, Cristiano Ronaldo got sent off this week. Ha! Ha!

Subs set the pace

It was a super sub who helped Kenny Ross stretch his lead at the top of the GKL this week. With Adebayor out, in came Steinsson with a sweet 11 points. Managerial genius? Somehow, we doubt it.

It was a slow week for scoring all round with Serafino Ingardia bursting into the top 10 and Willie Johnston into the top 20 after a rash of sackings. Those who wrote him off (ie, me) have been made to look foolish. Well, more foolish than usual.

Worst still, his brother Brian has also stormed into contention although old father Tommy is still struggling somewhat in 16th spot.

Let us spare a word, too, for manager of week 13 - Carlo Rinaldi. Yes, do not adjust your monitor, that says Carlo Rinaldi. At last, the ever-humble, shy and retiring Chas managed to pick the right captain as Nicolas "Le Sulk" Anelka grabbed him 26 points. Phenomenal. Carlito celebrated in traditional style with three kilos of spaghetti alle vongole.

In what some have dubbed "the week of the old timer" another performance of note was notched up by Doug Archibald. Clearly, since retiring from his generously remunerated post with the Dumfries and Galloway Standard he has been putting his spare time to good use. His old home town would be proud.

Finally, a plea to all the managers who may be at the point of abandoning hope (I'm talking to you Willie Johnston).
